A Tribute to a Gentle Giant- Tesfaldet Alem Meharena
The death of the gentle and humble Eritrean giant Tesfaldet Meharena, has shocked and saddened all of us who knew him. In this time of sorrow and mourning, I would like to say condolences to his entire family, friends and compatriots. While it is painful to see him go too soon, there is solace in knowing he was larger than life. I am particularly touched by the reaction following his departure, how much and how many people he touched. Many described him using adjectives such as a beacon, shining star, teacher, pioneer, mentor, brave journalist, innovator, humble, kind, generous, gracious…… ዓቢ ጽላል፡ ትሑት: መምህር፡ ዳዕሮ፡ ጅግና፡ ብዓል ራኢ፡ ድሙቕ ኮኾብ፡ መብራህቲ: ሕያዋይ: ተባዕ፡ ንሕልንኡ ጥራይ ዝግዛእ፡ ኣቦ ተስፋ፡ መሃዚ፡ ጅግና ጋዜጠኛ፡ ደላይ ጽቡቕ፡ ኣቦ ሓድነት፡ ኣቦ ሓርነትን: ኣቦ ሰላም፡ ኣቦ ፍቕሪ፡ ኣርማ ፍትሒ፡ ዓቃል፡ ሓርበኛ፡ ጻዕራም፡ ምቕሉል፡ ፍሕሹው፡ ተዋዛያይ: ለጋስ. . . This is unique endorsement of a man loved and respected by those who know him closely or from afar, may be that is why one summed him up “ምሉእ ሰብ” and a close friend expressed his profound sadness “ብሓደ ተስፋልደት፣ ሰብ ወሓደ: ጸልሚታ ‘ዛ ዓለም መብራህቲ አብ ዘይብሉ እታ ሓንቲ ሸምዓኻ ትጠፍእ ድያ? I cannot describe the great Tes, my acronym-sake, better, and so I share all the acknowledgement, and say ditto to all of it and more. I hope that such an outpouring of glowing tribute, love and sympathy expressed by so many people will ease the pain for his kids and larger family, and those of us who feel the deep sense of loss.
Like many, I first met Tesfaldet in the revolution- internet revolution that is- through his handiwork in the form of Asmarino.com, in the new Asmara internet cafes that brewed fresh ideas and information. Due to the snail or shall I say tortoise pace, you had to wait to unveil Asmarino or Awate pages, like a groom unveiling his bride- things haven’t changed much on that front two decades later, we hear. We were just as excited by the new virtual world as we were seeing the other side of our country’s story. The pioneers of the Eritrean digital press like Tes and his contemporaries, showed us a glimpse of the possibilities of the future. And we loved it. Of course, we can’t forget in the early noughties, Tes opened a digital café in Asmarino’s ‘chat room’ where we spent, I must admit, a considerable time chatting to random strangers with strange nicknames (we were homesick)…..who knows real relationships might have come out of it….
Few years after, the humble giant came to South Africa where I met him for the first time in person. It was during this time that I came in touch with journalism- he gave me and my friends the first taste of digital journalism. I have never seen someone as laser-focused at work like him. We were clueless about everything he was telling us but never gave up in us and worked harder to make sure we got a grip.
During the little time he had for a break he broke into humour- he was incredibly funny. He stayed at our place and for a week or so we spent the nights discussing emerging technologies and the digital revolution- he was consumed by it all at the time- he was an IT junkie, to use the lexicon of day. Whether developing a website, Geez software or different apps his contribution remains immense. He was a genius full of energy. And it was during those long and deep conversations (over lovely coffee and tea he brought us from his travels to East Africa) that I was able to see his beautiful soul and kind heart. I was in awe of his creativity, dignity and humility. He was indeed a profoundly optimist, visionary, and revolutionary. His imagination of Eritrea at peace with itself and the world, his indefatigable work to inform and empower society guided him. Everything he had, be it knowledge, skill or material, he shared and shared. His brain, finger and heart print is everywhere. He lived and breathed the ideals of liberty, freedom, and dignity. I firmly believe he has done more than his fair share and completed his race- ጉያኡ ብዓወት ወዲኡ!! He has mentored many who shall carry his vision and am glad he was able to see that. He is a hero! Many of us are lucky and grateful to have met or known him. So, it is time celebrate him and his achievement, even with heavy hearts.

As they say, there is always an end. Tesfalidet grew up among rich family, every eritrean grew up enjoying the biscuit of Enda Alem Meharena who happen to be the product of his family.
The selfless tesfalidet launched the first anti higdef website in 1997. Perhaps the first Eritrean. Later he helped and encouraged young youtubers such as mestiyat betna and Fanus gentlemen to establish their own websites and helped them technically.
Had tesfalidet were an egoist, he would have kissed the asz of higdef and would have lived in one of the villas in Asmara or Dekemhare which he has inherited from his father comfortably but not him, he said NO. He opted to stand with his hapless brothers and sisters.

I am very saddened to hear the passing of Meharena. He was really a committed, ambitious, helpful, and culturally aware person.
His website asmarino.com was among the top websites after dehai.org and later also visafric.com that were Eritrea's face outwards to defend Eritrea's sovereignty and government's reputation against TPLF's aggressive lying propaganda that had a wide spread in the western corporate media at that time (1998-2000).
What most Eritreans know him for is also because he was the first to open a mIRC chat program which made it possible for many Eritreans to chat and share ideas and thoughts with each other. He usually actively participate in the talks there as well.
May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family, children and all who know him in this time of sorrow and bereavement.

I Know Him Very Well In Lamirada City Near Orange County Anaheim, Cypress City. We Used To Play Soccer In Cypress College With His Brother Berekhet Alem Meharena And Berekhet Wife Qidussan.
The Sad Story Is His Former Wife Died In Cancer 16 Years Ago And His Older Sister Committed Suicide In Long Beach City Around Almost Same Year. And He Became Pentte Dumping An Orthodox Christianity. He Married The Pentte Lady From Lamirada Or Alhambra City And Washed His Hand Like Pillatos Not To Get Involved In Eritrean Politics. His Older Brother Was More Respected And Before Eritrean Independent 1991 He Did Help Shaebia Community In Los Angeles And Orange County. We Played Soccer With Robel Afewerki, ( Brother Of Isias Afewerki) Pre Independent Eritrea . To Name Few Of Former Players Are { Amanuel Tecleberhan (Cousin Of Haile Dirue),Yeinabi WoldeBiruk, Nezzar Mohamed(Al Hillal Footballer In Sudan)YissaQ Areaya, Yissaq Anddu , Aron Tadesse Former A Loser Singer, Reagea Singer Layne Tadesse ( Aron Brother)Mehari Amainel , Beyan Beshir ( Deceased) Yassin BattuQ Jebelli, Jabir Abdu, Yasin Seyied A Crook Agga*me Jebbertty}. One of the most generous people I have ever met. Guided by his strong faith, love and appreciation of all that is good. A kind of a person you would love to meet in person, and I was honoured to have had that opportunity.

و تسفالدت آلم ، خبير تكنولوجيا الإنترنت، انتقل إلى إريتريا من مسقط رأسه لوس أنجلوس بالولايات المتحدة إلى إرتريا بعد استقلال
وكان تسفالدت قد اقترح على الحكومة الارترية بإدخال تطوير الإنترنت في إرتريا إلا أن اقتراحه لم يجد قبولا ، وفي العام 1997 قام تسفالدت بتأسيس مقع أزمارينو المعروف ، في عام 2001، بعد خروج إريتريا عن الديمقراطية وأغلقت صحفها الخاصة واعتقلت الصحفيين والمسؤولين الذين طالبوا بالتغيير، أصبح موقع “أزمارينو” مفتوحًا أمام الكتاب وفتح منصة لحرية التعبير
وأتاح الموقع، مجموعات متنوعة من الموضوعات والمعلومات التي تختلف عن التي تقدمها الحكومة

ኣብ ተመኩሮ ደቂ ሰብ ሞት ቀሊል ኮይኑ ኣይፈልጥን፡ ኣብ ግዜ ንእስነት ይኹን ኣብ እርጋን፡ ብሃንደበት ይኹን ድሕሪ ነዊሕ ሕማም፡ ኩሉ ግዜ ኣብ ልብና ናይ ምፍልላይ ሓዘንን፡ ንብዓት፡ ጽምዋን ናፍቖትን ይገድፍ እዩ። እንተኾነ ከም ኣመንቲ ሰብ ተስፋ ኢና። ንሞት ብሞቱ ዝሰዓረ ጐይታና ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ ግና ኪንዮ ቀራንዮ ባዶ መቓብርን ኩላትናን ከም ዘሎ ኣረጋጊጹልና እዩ። ብክርስቶስ እንተንነብር ድማ ምስ ክርስቶስ ኣብ ሰማያዊ መንግስቱ ከም እንወርስ ውን ኣረጋጊጹልና እዩ። ክብርን ስብሓትን ንስሙ ይኹን።
ናይ ብሓቂ ዓቢ ሰብ ከሲርና።
ኮይኑ ግን ነፍስሔር ተስፋልደት ንፍትሒ ዝተቃለሰ ክቡር ሓው ኣብ ዝተፈላለየ ግዜ ብተሌፎን ዝተራኸብናሉን ዘዕለልናዮን ንዝግበረልይ ጦብላሕታ እናዘከርኩ፡ ኣምላኽ ኣብ ገነቱ ንኽቕበለካ ጸሎቶይ እዩ። ጽንዓት ንኹሎም ስድራ ቤትን ፈተወትን ይሃበልና።
"እቲ ኻብ ምዉታት ዝተንስኤ ክርስቶስ መሊሱ ኸም ዘይመውት፡ ሞትውን ኣብኡ ኸም ዘይመልኽ ፈሊጥና፡ ንሕና ምስ ክርስቶስ ካብ ሞትናስ፡ ምስኡ ድማ ብህይወት ከም እንነብር፡ ንኣምን ኣሎና።" ሮሜ 6: 8-9

ሓዉ እንድየ፡ ኣብ ዘድሊ ኣየናሕሰኹሉን
ብሰላም ዕረፍ፡ ኣድራሻ ልኣኸለይ
ኹለን እንስሳታትን ጽሩራታትን ዝሓዘት ባኮ
ብሽኮቲ-ኣለም-መሓረና ክልእኸልካ
ነዛ መልእኽቲ ኣብ ኣስማሪኖ ስቐለለይ
ብሰላም ኣብ ሕቑፊ-የሱስ ዕረፈለይ
ጽንዓት ንኹሎም ሥድራቤትን ደቅኻን ፈተውትን
ካብ ሙሉኣት ሥድራቤትካ ሥድራይ
