ተኪአ በየነ፡ ምስትምቓር ጥበብ !!
ብኣለምሰገድ ተስፋይ !!

ሓደ መዓልቲ፥ ንተኪአ በየነ ኣንጊሀ ደዊለ፡ “እደልየካ`ሎኹ፡ ንዓ ኦፊሰይ” ኢለዮ። ግድን ከኣ ኢለዮ ምእንቲ ኸይኣብየኒ። ቀልጢፉ ምስ መጸ፡ “ድሓን ዲኻ?” ኢሉኒ፡ ንዓይ ወይ ንስድራይ ገለ ዘጓነፈና መሲሉዎ። ከይተዛረብኩ፡ ናይ 1960 ጋዜጣ ዘመን ገንጺለ፡ ሓንቲ ምልክታ ኣርእየዮ። “መርዓ ወደይ ተኪአ በየነ፡ ኣብ’ዚ ዕለት`ዚ ኽውዕል ስለ ዝኾነ፡ ኣብቲ ፈለማ ኣበባይ ምሳይ ሓቢርኩም ክትውዕሉ ብኽብሪ እዕድመኩም ኣሎኹ። እቶም ብሰንኪ ሕጽረት ወረቐት ዕድመ ዘይበጽሓኩም ፈተውትን መቕርብን ድማ በዚ ምልክታ`ዚ ተዓዲምኩም ኣሎኹም። ይብሉ ግራዝማች በየነ መብራህቱ፡” እያ ትብል ነይራ፡ ወይ ንዕኡ ዝመስል ቃላት።
“በሽትያ፡ ኣነ ኸኣ ወይ ገለ ኣጓኒፉዎ`ሎ ወይ ስብሓት ተስፋይ ገለ ኾይኑ`ሎ ኢለ ሂፍ እናበልኩ መጺአ።” ስብሓት ተስፋይ ማለት ዓቢ ሓወይ፡ መሳርሕቱን ዓርኩን ዝነበረ እዩ። ሽዑ እናሰሓቕናን ኣብ ሃኮሰኤ ቡን እናሰተናን ብዛዕባ መርዕኡ፡ ብዛዕባ ማኣዛን ደቁን ኣተዓባብያኦምን ኣስፊሑ ኣዘንትዩለይ። ብዛዕባ ፍቕራን ፍቕሩን፡ ሞያኣን ተኣማንነታ ከም ብዓልቲ ቤትን ዓቃል ሕብሓበኣ ከም ወላዲትን ካብ ቃላቱ እየ ሰሚዐዮ። ተኪኤ ማለት ማእዛ ምዃኑ ሽዑ ተገንዚበ:: ሃብታም ኢኻ፡” ኢለዮ። “ድኻ`ባ መደኽደኽ፡፡” “ስማዕ፡ መን ኣሎ ካብ’ዞም መዛኑና ከማኻ ዝተዓወተ ? ኣብቲ ግዜ ንእስነትና መብዛሕትና ፈቐድኡ ዓንዘርዘር ክንብል፡ ንኹሉ ኣርኪብካሉ። ተመሃራይ ብዓል ሓዳር፡ ናይ ፖለቲካ እሱር፡ ወላዲ፡ ባንከኛ ተባሂልካስ፣ ኣብ ኣስመራ ደጀን ትኾነካ ጥምርቲ ስድራ መስሪትካ ኸኣ ተጋዲልካ። ሓርበኛ ኣቢልካ ተመሊስካያ። እዚ ኸይኣኽለካ፡ ነቲ ሃገራዊ ባንክ ንዓመታት ገዚእካዮ። ኣብ ባጤራ ናቕፋ ፈርማኻ ኣስፊርካ። ሕጂ ኸኣ ብደቂ ደቅኻ ተኸቢብካ መጻሕፍቲ ትደርስ ኣሎኻ። ካብዚ ንላዕሊ መግለጺ ሃብቲ እስከ ኣምጽኣለይ።” ብዙሕ ስሒቕና። ምስ ተኪአ፡ ዕቱብ ይኹን ተራ ዕላል ጠፊኡኒ ወይ ተመንዩኒ ኣይፈልጥን። ተዛራቢ ጥራይ ዘይኮነ፡ ሰማዒ’ውን ስለ ዝነበረ፡ ሙቐትን ክብርን ዝልግስ፡ ርህራሀ ዘይፍለዮ ሰብ’ዩ ነይሩ። ልቦና ነይሩዎ፡ ግን ኣብ ዘድሊ ኸኣ ቃል ዓለም ኣይነበሮን። ወዋኒንና እናጐተተና`ኳ ከምቲ ዝድለ ኣዘውቲርና እንተ ዘይተራኸብና፡ ምኽሩን ምቁር ዋዛታቱን ዝናፍቕ ሰብ`የ ነይረ። ድምጹን ሰሓቑን ጽሬቱን ኣለባብስኡን ደጊም ኣይክርእን እየ፣ ነተን “በሽትያ፡ ኣባ ጥረግ” ዝብላ ዝውቱራት ኣጸዋውዓኡ ኣይክሰምዐንን እየ ኢለ ኽኣምን ከኣ የጸግመኒ።
ዜና ዕረፍቱ ካብ ዝሰምዕ፡ “ንተኪአ ኣበይ እየ ፈለማ ተፋሊጠዮ?” እናበልኩ ንነፍሰይ ክሓታ ቐንየ። በል እንተ በልኩ ግን ነታ ኣጋጣሚት ክረኽባ ኣይከኣልኩን። ብኣካል ዘይኮነስ ብኻልእ መገዲ እፈልጦ ጸኒሐስ፡ ከምዛ ኣቐዲምና ንፋለጥ ዝነበርና’ሞ ሕውስ ዝተበሃሃልና ኾይኑ ይስምዓኒ። መዓስ ምንባሩ`ውን ኣይዝክርን - ኣርብዓ-ሓምሳ ዓመት ይገብር ይኸውን። ርግጸኛ እየ፡ እዚ ጸገም ናይ ብዙሓት ፈለጥቱ ክኸውን ከም ዝኽእል። ግን ከኣ ኸገርም ኣይግባእን፡ ምኽንያቱ ከም ተኪአ በየነ ንዝመስሉ ሰባት፡ ግዜን ቦታን ክትፈልየሎም ወይ ኣብ ሓደ መቓን ክትሓጽሮም ስለ ዘሸግር። ንብዙሓት ዝሓቍፍ ዓቢ ልቢ ዘለዎ ሰብ፡ ክልል ናይ ግዜን ቦታን ክትገብረሉ ዝከኣል ኣይኮነን። እቲ ባህርያቱ ባዕሉ ፈንጺጉ ስለ ዝወጽእ፡ ክዝርጋሕ እምበር ክኹርመ ስለ ዘይመርጽ፡ ኣይቅየድን እዩ። ተኪአ ኸምኡ እዩ ነይሩ፣ ኣብ ኩሉ ይጸንሓካ ወይ ይመጸካ። እንዳ ሓጐስ፡ እንዳ ሓዘን፣ እንዳ ድኻ፡ እንዳ ሃብታም፣ ምስ ዓቢ ምስ ንእሽቶ... ምስ ቈልዑ’ውን። ሓደ መዓልቲ፡ ሕቋፍ ዕምባባ ሒዙ፡ እንዳ ሓዘን ኣባጽሓኒ ኢሉኒ። “ዋእ! እንዳ ሓዘንስ ዕምባባ?” ኢለዮ። “ሰሙናት ዝሓለፈ ስለ ዝኾነስ ኣይጸልእዎን ’ዮም ዝኾኑ፡” እናበለ ናብ ዘይፈልጦም ሓዘንተኛታት ወሲዱኒ። ኣዝዮም ተሓጒሶም፡ ኣብ ዲቕ ዝበለ ዕላል ኣቲና፡ ኣስሒቑን ኣዘናጊዑን ተፋንዩዎም። በቲ ሓደ ወገን ነዚ ዝመስል ዘመናዊ ወይ ሞደርን ዝኾነ ነገራት ክገብር ትርእዮ፡ በቲ ኻልእ ድማ፡ ወድ’ስመራን ዕባይ ኣስመራን ክነሱ፡ ኣብ ያታን ባህልን ሕብረተ ሰብና ክራቐቕ ትረኽቦ። ጸጸኒሐስ ኣቐዲመ ዘይፈለጥኩዎ ሓዲሽ ነገር እረኽበሉ’ሞ ዕጅብ ይብለኒ። ሓደ መዓልቲ ኣብ ኢሪ-ቲቪ ዲቕ ዝበለ ናይ ገጠር ዕላልን ደርፍን ከቕርብ ተዓዚበዮ። ኣብ መርዓ ሳሚ ወዱ ምስ ወናማት ገጢሙ ኮቦሮ ክድስቕ ምስ ረኣኹዎ ግን ኪኖ ምድናቕ ከይደ። ኣባ ግራይ ምዃኑ ድማ ሽዑ ፋልማየይ ፈሊጠ። ብናይ ውልቀይ ምኽንያት ጓይላን ሳዕስዒትን ዘቋረጽኩሉ እዋን`ዩ ዝነበረ። ከይተፈለጠኒ ተንሲአ ኣብ ከባቢኡ ኣዅዲደ፡ ዓጂበዮ። ሚእቲ ናቕፋ ኽጥቅዓሉ ካብ ጁባይ ምስ ኣውጻእኩዋ ግን፡ ኣቕኒኡኒ። “እዝስ ብኹሉ ነገር ክጻወተልና ኽነብር!” እናበልኩ ነታ ሚእቲ ናቕፋ ሒዘ ግዳም ብምውጻእ፡ ሓንቲ ኣቐዲማ ዘደንገጸትኒ ሽቓቕ ትሓጽብ ሰራሕተኛ ነይራ፡ ንዓኣ ጠቂዐላ። ኮቦርኡ ምስ ወድአ፡ “ወቓዕ ኮቦሮ`ውን`ባ ኢኻ፡ ኣባ ግራይ፡” ኢለዮ። “ክሳብ ሕጂ ኣይትፈልጥን ?” መመሊስካ ሓዲሽ ነገር እናምጻእካ’ኮ ኣትኪኽካና።” ናይታ ሚእቲ ናቕፋ ምስ ነገርኩዎ ኣበርቲዑ ስሒቑ። “ኣነ ኸኣ ክትስዕስዕ ምስ ርአኹኻ ተሓጉሸ። ‘እንኳዕ ኣሳዕሳዕኩኻ፡ እንኳዕ ከኣ ኣብ መርዓ ወደይ ኮነ፡’ ኽብለካ እናሓሰብኩ መጺእካኒ።” በብስምዒትና ተሓቛቚፍና። ብዛዕባ ጽሑፋቱ ካልኦት ከም ዝዛረቡሉ ስለ ዝግምት፡ ኣብዚ ዝብሎ የብለይን። ሓንቲ ነገር ጥራይ። “ካብ ሪቕ ሕፍንቲ” ተሓቲማ ምስ ተመረቐት ሓደ ንግሆ ደዊሉለይ። ኣብ ሓዳስ ኤርትራ ብስም ስነ ጽሑፋዊ ነቐፌታ፡ ትሕዝትኡ ይኹን መንፈሱ ክቕበሎ ዘይከኣልኩ፡ ንተኪአን መጽሓፉን ኣትሪሩ ዝወቅስ ጽሑፍ ዝወጸሉ መዓልቲ እዩ ነይሩ። ተኪአ ሓሪቑ ብኸመይ ክምልስ ከም ዝኽእል ምኽሪ ሓቲቱኒ። “ኣይትመልስ፡ ignore ግበሮም” ኢለዮ። “ቀዳማይ ነገር ናይ ብርዒ ስም ስለ ዝኾነ መን ክትብሎ ኢኻ? “ካብ ሪቕ ሕፍንቲ” ነባሪት ሓወልትኻ እያ። ምስ ሞትካ ድሕረኻ ትተርፍ መስመይትካ እያ። ዝወስደልካ የብልካን። ካልኣይ፡ እዚ ጽሑፍ ምስ’ቶም ነቐፍትኻን ናይ ብርዒ ስሞምን ጽባሕ ንግሆ`ውን ኣይክዝከርን እዩ። ስራሕካ ጥራይ ቀጽል፡ በዝን ክንድዝን ኣይትጐናደብ፡” ኢለዮ። “ሓቅኻ፡ ኣነ’ውን ናብ ከምኡ እንድየ ዛዝየ፡ ግን ርእይቶኻ ኽፈልጥ ስለ ዝደለኹ እየ፡” ኢሉኒ ተፈላሊና። ንተኪአ በየነ ብግዜን ቦታን ክትሓጽሮ ዝከኣል ኣይኮነን ኢለ ነይረ። “ካብ ሪቕ ሕፍንት”ን “ሶፍያ”ን ስለ ዝገደፈልና፡ ግዜን ቦታን ጥራይ ዘይኮነ፡ ሞት ብዓቢኡ`ውን ኣይፈላለየናን። ኣብዚ ንኽብሩ ዝካየድ ዘሎ ጽንብል ብኣካል ክርከብ ብዘይ ምኽኣለይ ቅር ይብለኒ። ንወይዘሮ ማእዛ ምስ ኡሎም ደቃን (ገሊኦም`ኳ ንዓይ’ውን ኣዕሩኸይ እዮም) ደቂ ደቃን ጽንዓትን ሓበንን እናተመነኹ፡ ሕውነታዊ ሰላምታይ አቕርብ።

ንተኪአ ከም ኵሉ ኤርትራዊ ኣቐዲመ ብርሑቕን ስሙን ደኣ እፈልጦ ይንበር’ምበር᎓ ካብ 2006 ኣትሒዝና ግን ናይ ቀረባ መሳርሕቲ᎓ መማኽርቲን ናብ ቤተሰብ ዝሰገረ ኣዝዩ ጥቡቕ ዕርክነትን ነይሩና። ሕጂ’ምበኣር በታ ዝፈልጦ᎓ ገና ምስ ግንፉል ስምዒተይ᎓ ንኣያ ተኪአ (ከምቲ ኵሎም ቀረብቱ ዝጽውዑዎ) ከም ሰብ ህይወቱ ክጽንብሎ።

Kab Rix’ Ḥǝfnti (ካብ ሪቕ ሕፍንቲ): A Memoir by Tekie Beyene. Asmara, Hidri Publishers, 2009. 286

Kab Rix’ Ḥǝfnti, a memoir written in Tigrinya, breaks new ground in the annals of Eritrean literature not only for the style it adopts but also for its treatment of the independence struggle through personal experience.

Starting from the title, roughly translated as “A Handful of Grain from the Granary‟, the author acknowledges that his book is a modest attempt to narrate the history of the Eritrean independence struggle. Memoirs are rare in Eritrea. Kab Rix’ has already drawn criticism for the personal stance the author adopted in the book in describing his experiences as a member of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF).

Tekie Beyene, a writer, a journalist and a freedom fighter with the EPLF, has served as head of the then Eritrean Relief Association. After independence, he headed the Eritrean Investment Center and served as Governor of National Bank of Eritrea. He has written for, and served in the editorial board of, Ḥǝwyät, a Tigrinya magazine. His major literary contribution came in the form of a Tigrinya translation of Sophie’s World (1991). The book sold a record of 1000 copies in the first five days of its publication. Kab Rix’ is the first original book-length work by the author.

After three weeks of its publication, Kab Rix’ was subjected to strong criticism for its “unconventional” personal account of the author’s long-standing involvement with Eritrea’s liberation movement. A writer in Ḥadass Erǝtra (2009) criticized the author for “dwelling on the personal by ignoring the communal culture of the EPLF‟. Tekie seems to have anticipated this, as he, in the preface, revealed that it was his plan to go against this tradition.
He stated: “I have tried to deliberately go against the wisdom of avoiding the use of the personal ‘I’ in the struggle and the society. However, in the book I have also tried to show that the ‘I’ is in fact part of the ‘we’.” Readers can sense a hint of discomfort the author feels as he embraces the subjective stance. But he is forceful in pointing out the threat the tradition poses: “[T]he history of Eritrea faces the danger of trivialization due to this uneasiness to treat it from personal angles.” The absence of personal accounts in narrating the history of Eritrean revolution has been noted by Alemseged Tesfai, a well-known writer and historian. Tesfai in an interview in 2006 with Tsedal Tigrinya magazine, noted the importance of personal accounts of former revolutionaries in enriching the works of historians interested in the liberation movement.

Kab Rix’ covers two decades (end of 1950 to early 1980) of the author’s experiences in the resistance. The six-part book, although the author maintains that it details his personal political life, is also an account of the political phases the country was undergoing. The fate of the author was the fate of many Eritreans: innocent youth were confronted with terror and intimidation from the Ethiopian regime which pushed many to eventually join the resistance. This can be clearly read from the pages of Kab Rix’, and clearly supports the author’s claim in the preface that the
personal experiences are in fact subsumed within the collective ones.

In the first chapter, the author narrates his and five other students’ role in the 1960 student riots. The organizers were young students who were disillusioned by Ethiopia’s political domination exercised under the federal arrangement. The students’ response was to organize mass protests in Asmara and other towns. The young students, who were barely 20, except for their leader Tikue Yihdego, planned to organize protests in every corner of the country. However, except for the ones in Asmara, their plans elsewhere were not successful. In Asmara, they had already made secret contacts with many students and when the time came they were surprised to see many students joined by many more from the public who simply seized the opportunity to express their
frustration with the Ethiopian domination. This event would make a lasting impression on the author throughout his life.

Tekie Beyene, yours’ was never a short-term contract with Eritrea. Your loyalty to your people was unwavering through the war for freedom from Ethiopian slavery. All you were going over personally and health wise, was camouflaged by a smile that was your eternal signature.

We met – after decades - at Meda. You were so surprised to see me there. I asked you the reason for such deep surprise. You shook your head and said “later, we will discuss it later.” That later never came, because time passed by and you filled me with knowledge of our history. Your voice calm, your eyes piercing. Everyone around respected you - Tekie Beyene - but we loved you beyond words. The latter makes it harder to move on.

You are the soldiers who survived the war physically, and came home to face the shock-waves of misery surrounding your people. You were fast to gather your courage and walk a new active trail, anxious to serve Eritrea and fix a dead economy; all this while we were still dancing in the streets of each Eritrean city. The flag standing tall in a free Eritrean wind increased your courage and patriotism. It was evident that one like you not showing emotions thorough the after-war times, was giving us an understandable message of struggles waiting for us, foreshadowing the unbelievable. Flattery was never your style and applause to powerful astonished you.

The last time I saw you in Asmara, we walked from Bar Impero towards the San Francesco church. A long walk by any standard, I was holding your hand to be strong. In a rush, I informed you that I was leaving the day after and I already was missing Asmara. I told you the reason I had left a promise in Keren and why my thoughts were in M’Batcalla. You were silent. You listened and then said, “You must come back, Kiki. This is your land. This is the land your Berhane gave Eritreans as a gift and we need to take care of it, no matter the slander, no matter the unbearable pain!” You went on reminding me this:” Never forget that while you were with us at Meda, a priest passing by gave you a copper bell and asked you to build a church in his village. You already forgot that? ” You asked. With so many bits of advises, I was pulling tissues from my handbag and blustering words whilst my tears welled in my eyes.

Why was I crying and you were the strong one Tekie dear? Because you were you! The one that gave advises. You made all of us feel that in a sea of friends, we found you and you were the right one! You never allowed me to create a space between my disappointments and my love for Eritrea. Your voice resonates to this day and is a guide I will keep dear to my heart. Our permanent rendezvous place was at Bar Impero; we would have a coffee and then walk to our friend “Wedi Tesfai” at the Commercial Bank; another coffee and so many more laughter. I miss you both, and I miss our routine. I realized that such routine became my little nuclear family and my base back home. You left your heart in our land. Your tears fortify our beaches and ask us to own them! You fought to the end for true peace and true freedom.

Goodbye never fits a Veteran, because our love for our Martyrs never ends. It only means "I will miss you". Give a hug to my Berhane waiting for you – with all the band of sisters and brothers - at the Gates of Heaven.

"ኣብ ኢትዮጵያ፡ ንኣብነት፡ ብዛዕባ'ዚ ሃጓፍ ዘመን'ዚ ብዙሕ'ዩ ተጻሒፉ - ምስ ነቐፌታኡ'ኳ ድኣ። ኣብ ኤርትራ ግን እቲ ተርእዮ ብስቕታ'ዩ ዚግለጽ ዘሎ።
መዘናታት ተኪኤ፡ ከምቲ ንሱ ዝገበሮ፡ በቲ ብቐጥታ ዝተሞከሩዎ ፍጻሜታት ብብዝሒ ከዘንትዉ እንተ ዝኽእሉ ነይሮም እቲ ናይ ሕጂ ወለዶ ብዙሕ ክመሃር ምኸኣለ።
እዚ ናይ ሕጂ ወለዶ ብዛዕባ ዘመነ ኣቦይ ወልድኣብ ወልደማርያምን ሸኽ ኢብራሂም ሱልጣንን ይፈልጦ'ዩ ኢልካ ምዝራብ ኣየተኣማምንን፣ በቲ ዝሰዓበ ዘመን'ውን ከምኡ - ዘመን ብረታዊ ቃልሲ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ፣ እቲ ዝሰዓበ ሳልሳይ ዘመን፡ 'ዘመነ ድሕረ ናጽነት' ንምርዳእ እቶም ዝሓለፉ ዘመናት ምፍላጦም ኣድላይ እዩ። ብኻልእ ኣዘራርባ፡ ዘመነ 'ሓዳስ ኤርትራ' ብግቡእ ንምርዳእ ብዛዕባ ዘመን 'ናይ ኤርትራ ሰሙናዊት ጋዜጣ' ዀነ ዘመነ ጋዜጣ 'ሕብረት' ምፍታሽ የድሊ። ተኪኤ'ምብኣር ብዛዕባ እቶም ክልተ ቀዳሞት ዘመናት'ዩ ብዓውታ ገሊጹ።
እቲ ቀንዲ ተራኺ ወለዶ ካብቲ እዋን ገድሊ ዝነበሩ ሰባት'ዩ ክመጽእ ነይሩዎ (ካብ ተጋደልትን ህዝብን)፣ ግናኸ መብዛሕትኦም ብስቕታ ተገዲዖም ከም ሓውሲ ኣሜንተኛታት ኰይኖም ተሪፎም ምባል ነውሪዶ ይኸውን?
ኣብ መቓቕሮ ክልተ ዉድባት
ተኪኤ ንበዓልቲ ኪዳኑ ምስ ሓሙሽተ ቈልዑ ገዲፉላ ራሕሪሑዋ ክኸይድ ... "ጕዳይ ሃገርዶ ይዓቢ ጕዳይ ቤተ-ሰብ?" ኣብ ዚብል ዉሽጣዊ መጐተ ተጸሚዱ ምንባብ ሕልና ኣንባቢ'ዩ ዚትንክፍ። ከም ሓቁ፡ "ሰብዶ ካብ ሕልንኡ፡ ካብ ገዛእ ርእሱ፡ ካብ ፍቕሪ ስድራ-ቤቱ ክሃድም ይኽእል'ዩ?" ዘኣመሰሉ ዉሽጣውያን ሕቶታት በጨቕ ከም ዝብሉ ዀይኑ'ዩ።
እቲ ሽዑ ኣዝዩ ዓዚዙ ዝነበረ ሽግር ኤርትራውያን ከመይ ኢሎም ናብ ጀብሃ ይዅን ሻዕብያ ይስለፉ ከም ዝነበሩ'ዩ። እታ መጽሓፍ ህዝቢ ኣብ መንጎ ተቐርቂሩ ከም ዝነበረ ኣጕሊሓ'ያ ተርኢ፣ ተኪኤ ንባዕሉ ክሳብ ክንደይ ተቐርቂሩ ከም ዝነበረ ከዘንቱ ምንባብ ንልቢ ኣንባቢ ቅርጥማት ይፈጥረሉ። ካብ ሓደ ምድሪ-ቤት፡ ካብ ሓደ ኸባቢ፡ ካብ ሓደ ገዛ ገሊኦም ናብ ጀብሃ ገሊኦም ናብ ሻዕብያ ዝኸድሉ እዋን'ዩ ነይሩ።
ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ልቡ ሸፊቱ ስለ ዝነበረ መንግስቲ ደርጊ ክንደይ ግዕዘይ ይኣልም ከም ዝነበረ፡ ምስኡ ኸኣ ልቢ ህዝቢ ከመይ ኢሉ ከም ዝተኸፍለ - ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ፍርቁ ምስ ተሓኤ ፍርቁ ድማ ምስ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ስለ ዝነበረ።"
