Given the nature of the Isaias Afwerki regime, that any kind of mutiny, uprising or attempt of coup de tat (we don’t know which happened on Jan 21, 2013), that it would be followed up with a new wave of arrests is to be expected. And, given its totalitarian nature, the sweeping nature of these arrests make predictably fail to make any distinction between the merely suspected and the confirmed ones, The modus operandi of its security apparatus is arrest first, confirm later; and whenever confirmation is not possible, the regime follows the safest approach: keep the arrestees in the dungeons indefinitely.
Already reports of various arrests in the aftermath of the unrest are appearing in various websites. www.farajat.net, based on the information it got from the Gulf Centre for Media Services, has reported that 63 from the military and some from civil have been arrested. Among the top brass, it mentions Amanuel “Hanjema” Haile; Abdella Jaber, the Director of Organizational Affairs; and Mustafa Hussein, the Adminstrator of South Zone and Colonel (?) Osman Saleh among the arrested. Awate.com differs in this list of the top brass arrested in that it includes the Osman Jem’ee Idris, the Eritrean Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, as being either in prison or under house arrest; and that Brig. General (?) Osman Saleh is safe in the South zone, protected by his soldiers. That Isaias will use the latest dissent as pretext to make sweeping arrests of anybody suspected of anything is confirmed by this latest news from the Christian Post [Eritrea Officials Arrest 10 Church Leaders; Christians Fear Increase ... ]:
“Although an incident in which dissident Eritrean soldiers seized the country's information ministry earlier this week is now being downplayed as not a coup attempt, a heightened tension between political and faith groups remains. The Christian persecution watchdog group Open Doors says that at least 10 leaders of churches banned by the government have been arrested.” And then it adds, “‘The arrest of 10 church leaders in Eritrea could be the start of another wave of systematic persecution in this unpredictable, tiny country bordering the Red Sea,’ says Open Doors USA Media Relations Director Jerry Dykstra.”
Given the closed nature of Eritrea, it has become hard to get the exact news of what actually happened on the 21st of January and in its aftermath. But the little information that is coming out of the country tells that it is a deja vu moment: a failed mutiny by the top, followed by a wave of arrests. What has remained consistent is that the Revolution keeps eating its own children: if the news from Awate.com and farajat.net is to be believed, it seems that the very men who were instrumental in devouring the G-15 (none other than Abdella Jaber and Mustafa Hussein) are now being devoured by that same Beast.
The Eritrean government’s official website disclosed on Saturday that Colonel Abdurahman Mahmoud Jasser had died on February 2nd “following his recent sickness” and that he would be buried in the “Martyr’s Cemetery” on Sunday. The government passed its condolences to “the family members and friends”. Now, family members are saying that his death is a mystery and that the government had denied their request for an autopsy, according to Aljazeera (Arabic website).
Abdurahman Mahmoud Jasser, a veteran combatant who joined the Eritrean revolution for independence in 1975, worked for the National Security Office. His family says that he was in good health and he had been seen publicly on January 24 in the televised celebration of Mewlid Al Nebi, which is often attended by government and party officials.
The government report does not have any details on his illness other than to say that he had been “under intensive medical care” and had been hospitalized.
While it is impossible to ascertain which version of the story is correct, the following facts are relevant:
1. The government’s decision to bury him in the “Martyr’s Cemetery” does not mean anything. As we disclosed in the “Martyr’s Database” which we published following the 1998-2000 Eritrea-Ethiopia border war, it is very common for the government to name as “martyrs” even soldiers that it had executed. It can also deny the honor of “martyr’s cemetery” even to Eritreans with long contribution to the revolution, as was the case with Taha Mohammed Nur, who died in prison in Eritrea.
2. There are no norms, nor consistency, in the government’s decision to disclose or fail to publicize the death of the veterans of Eritrea’s revolution. The regime waited for days to publish the death of Ali Said Abdella, and it is yet to publish the death of Naizghi Kflu, who was buried in England after it denied burial rights to his family.
3. The announcement of the death of Colonel Abdurahman Mahmoud Jasser and the decision to bury him the next day seems highly expedited, in relationship to the death and burial of other government officials.
4. Following an uprising by members of the Eritrean Defense Force to lay seige on the Ministry of Information on January 21, the regime has arrested many government officials, including senior members of the ruling party and the government. As part of its attempt to deny Eritreans the right to information, it is blocking Aljazeera broadcasts to Eritrea.
5. Following every “mysterious” death–or assassination attempts– the regime always promises to conduct an investigation and disclose the results–and it never does.

The Eritrean regime has arrested Suleiman Hajj and Jaber Dere’e.
Suleiman Hajj was the mayor of the city of Mendefera, and the deputy to the regional administrator of the South Zone (“Zoba Debub”), Mustapha Nurhussein. Mustapha, along with Abdella Jaber, who was the Director of Organizational Affairs for the ruling party, PFDJ, was arrested last week.
On Sunday, the arrest of Abdella Jaber and Mustapha Nurhussein was confirmed by a representative of the pro-Isaias Afwerki Eritrean community in Okaland, California to a regime-friendly Paltalk room. He stated that he, along with other “community leaders”, had gotten the directive to do so by the Eritrean embassy in Washington, DC.
Suleiman Hajj was Eritrea’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia shortly after Eritrea’s independence. As Mayor (or “administrator”) of the city of Mendefera, he functioned as the number 2 to Mustapha Nurhussein, with whom he had a close working relationship.
Jaber Dere’e was the representative of the ruling party, PFDJ, in its embassy in Saudi Arabia.
In a related issue, Gedab News is unable to confirm the arrest of Ahmed Haj Ali, the Minister of Energy and Mines. Although anything is possible in Isaias Afwerki’s Eritrea, his arrest seems implausible for the following two reasons:
(a) In the cliquish PFDJ system, Ahmed Haj Ali has two relatively strong friends who would warn him from associating with “undesirable elements”. One is Yemane Gebremeskel, the Chief of Staff of the Office of President, who solidified his friendship with Ahmed Haj Ali from their days as fellow EPLF activists in Italy in the 1980s. The other is Simon Gebredengel, the deputy National Security director, who is a close friend from their days as students in Russia in the 1970s.
(b) He does not get into “turf wars” or “power plays.” His ministry is essentially run by others: the de-facto Minister of Mines is Hagos “Kisha”, the Director of Economics Department for the ruling party; the de-facto Minister of Energy is Col Wedi Bayru.
There is no new information on the engineers of the January 21 movement. The Eritrean regime claims that there were 5 individuals who led the siege of the Ministry of Information and that four have been arrested and one was killed in a shoot-out. Gedab News is unable to confirm this information. Our sources in Sudan say that some members of the January 21 movement have begun crossing the border to Sudan.
