Kidane Mehari, a 40
years old Eritrean man killed himself on Sunday,
March 12th in Milan.
He escaped from his
country where he was desperate. Expelled from Sweden and forced to
live in Italy in extremely poor conditions, suffering from deep
depression, he hang himself on a tree among the rubbish of the
dismisses caserma Forlanini were he used to live together with other
Eritreans waiting for asylum documents. When his companions found
his body, they occupied the road stopping the traffic in order to
draw the attention on what happened.
Police forced them to
move by sticks (see picture above).
Near the place of the
suicide , the women of the Eritrean Community in Milan were
celebrating the Women Day singing and dancing. The fest continued in
the general indifference about the actual tragedy. Some of the women
started also to insult the representative of the Association Mossob
and Asper who were distributing flyers(*) about
the continuous repression of the Eritrean regime, the violation of
human rights in Eritrea like
arbitrary imprisonment, persecutions and tortures.
It is evident that the
young Eritrean people run away from Eritrea but in Italy they do not
find a better life.
Kidane (who leaves a
wife and kids in Asmara) is the fifth Eritrean man who suicides in
Italy.
We invite everyone to
participate in the activities that will take place in Italy in order
to inform and get Institutions and public opinion involved and to
make sure taht such tragedies do not happen never
again.
