On the 21st of September 2001, there was a knock on Seyoum Tsehaye's door in Asmara, Eritrea. He was already up but his 7 months pregnant wife was still in bed and his 2 year old was still sleeping peacefully. A few minutes later, he came back to the bedroom and told his wife that some policemen wanted to speak to him at the station and that he was going to be back later that afternoon.
19 years later, Seyoum Tsehaye has still not come home.

Before his imprisonment, Seyoum operated as a well-known and respected journalist and photographer. During the independence war he lead a group of war photographers whilst also working as a teacher. After the victory, he started the countrys first and only TV channel (ERI-TV).
Seyoum had always had disagreements with the leadership of the liberation movement and then later the country. He was known for his fearlessness and outspoken nature, which had even landed him in prison during the war and ended up causing his departure from ERI TV.
After this, Seyoum became a freelance journalist focused on the wellbeing of the people. When warned about the risks of his work, Seyoum always replied: "If we don't give them a voice, no one will"
One Day Seyoum was started by Seyoum's niece who grew up in Sweden. She chose the name to highlight our dual mission: to fight until the day Seyoum is free and until the day the Eritrea that he fought for (and still is fighting for from his cell) becomes reality.
On the 19th anniversary of Seyoum Tsehaye’s arrest, we honour his bravery and vow to continue his mission to give the Eritrean people a voice.

Eritrea: My grandmother died heartbroken but never defeated

My grandmother Roma Solomon died heartbroken. She died grieving her son, Seyoum, who had been disappeared by the regime for twenty years. She died grieving her country, Eritrea, that had been destroyed by the comrades she had fought with and trusted.
