Libya preparing to deport Eritreans

EHDR-UK - 7 Aug 2006

EHDR-UK received worrying news from Libya where about 400 Eritreans are currently detained awaiting deportation to Eritrea. They are currently detained in a place called Al MerJ which is around 100 km from Benkagazi. 300 of these are men with the remaining 100 being women and children. These include 5 children aged between 2 and 6 years old and a pregnant woman. Six of the detainees have a serious medical condition.

There are reports that the Libyan authorities are preparing to deport the Eritreans back to Eritrea and as a result some of the women have started a hanger strike on Sunday.

EHDR-UK is seriously concerned about the fate and welfare of these Eritreans and is lobbying the Libyan authorities and the international refugee and human rights NGOs to protect these Eritreans and urges all Eritrean organisations and individuals to do what they can in order to avoid another tragedy.

Eritrea: Human Rights 2005

US Department of State - 9 Mar 2006

The government's human rights record worsened, and it continued to commit numerous serious abuses. Tensions increased over the border impasse with Ethiopia, and the government increased its roundups of young men and women for national service and imposed additional travel restrictions on diplomats, humanitarian and development agencies, and UN Mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia (UNMEE).....

The London-based NGO Eritreans for Human and Democratic Rights reported that on June 10 military personnel shot and killed 161 youth at Wia Military Camp who were trying to escape.

Eritrea: Human Rights Overview 2005

HRW - March 2005

The Eritrean government’s tyranny became more ruthless in 2005. Rule by force and caprice remains the norm, as the government aggressively moves to intimidate the population and to isolate it from the outside world.

The border dispute with Ethiopia continues to fester and is used by the government to justify repressive policies. The government of Eritrea seriously interfered with the United Nations’ ability to monitor troop movements along the border in 2005 and threatened to resume war unless Ethiopia accepts an independent Boundary Commission decision which it considers favorable.

Hunger strike in detention

EHDR-UK - 28 Oct 2005

The detained parents from Dekemhare & its suburbs are to stage a hunger strike from Saturday 29 October 2005 for an unspecified period of time. They are protesting against their detention arguing that their children were the responsibility of the state and that they should be asking the state to return their children and not the other way round. They plan to protest against their unfair detention. The government has asked for a bail money of 50,000Nakfa for their release and will be taken by the state if their children failed to return within 30 days. It is also reported that some children have been left without their parents following the most recent wave of arrests.

It is to be recalled that over 200 parents and relatives of those who left the country without exit visas were detained in the early hours of Monday 24 October 2005. The detained have asked Eritreans in Diaspora and the international community to do what they can to secure their release.

Hundreds more of Eritrean Parents Arrested in the Southern Region
EHDR-UK - 26 Oct 2005

The Eritrean government has continued its wave of arrests in the southern region. The operation, which restarted in DEKEMHARE and its suburbs in the early hours of Monday 24 October 2005, detained around 179 women and about 26 men. The targets were the parents of those who left the country without exit visas in the last several years. The arrests mainly focused on mothers, fathers, and in the absence of a father or a mother, the eldest available brother or the closest adult relative were detained.

It is to be recalled that in July this year hundreds of parents were detained in the southern region and some were released after paying bail money amounting to thousands of Nakfa. The total number of the detainees is now estimated to be in the thousands.

Eyewitnesses have reported that the detained parents and relatives include elderly people, some of whom were infirm or blind. Eyewitnesses have also reported that children who were pursuing their mothers were belted & pushed back inhumanely.

Symposium on Human Rights in Eritrea on Monday 19 Sep 2005

EHDR-UK

EHDR-UK is organising a whole day symposium to highlight the human rights situation in Eritrea.  The month is selected, as it was a single month when numerous voices were collectively suppressed.  We'll remember all those detained illegally for their political or religious beliefs or those for expressing their views.  Current day Eritrea is cited by many as the location for some of the world’s worst human rights violations. There is a grave concern over the situation that progressively deteriorates with each passing day.

Speakers and those taking part include Dan Connell, Dr Gaim Kibreab, Mussie Ephrem, Michaela Wrong, Martin Plaut, Dr Jelaledin and representatives from Amnesty, Release Eritrea, Reporters Without Borders and Eritreans who were victims of human rights abuse or families of those imprisoned & disappeared.  Eritrean government and opposition representatives have been invited.  People from a number of other NGOs and British government departments will also be attending.

The End of the Long March

ASPER & Eritrean Civil Societies

20 July 2005

Samuel and Tekle completed their long march today.  They arrived in Rome this morning and were received by a number of enthusiastic supporters.  It is to be recalled that SAmuel and Tekle started their march on Wednesday 15 June from Geneva and it took them just over a month to walk 1200 km to get to Rome.  The reason for the walk was to highlight the human rights situation and prison conditions in Eritrea.  They have been collecting supporting signatures on their walk.  There is also an on-line petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/FreeErit/ .  They will be presenting the petition to Pope Benedict's Office as soon as they are able to.  The on-line petition will remain open for the coming few days.  Detailed report will follow soon.

Failure of PFDJ festival in London

EHDR-UK, July 2005

The PFDJ festival that was held in London last weekend (1 3 July 2005) was neither grand nor enthusiastically accepted.  To begin with not all of the guest singers made it to London and so that was the first snag in the festivities.

EHDR-UK was prepared to protest against the festival saying that "the cry of our people's pain and suffering is lauder than the sound of the festival" and by holding banners calling for justice, for the rule of law and for the release of prisoners.

The Most Human Response

EHDR-UK - 16 June 2005

They say bad things happen when good people do nothing. Many people are concerned about the level of human rights abuse that is occurring in Eritrea, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that every Eritrean house-hold has now been visited by one or another form of human rights abuse that is perpetrated by the Government of Eritrea. However it is also the case that many have thus far chosen to do nothing.......

EHDR-UK calls on all Eritreans and friends of Eritrea to rally behind this courageous duo and offer them support by signing the petition to be presented to Pope Benedict XVI. Click here to sign the petition.

Successful demonstration outside Downing Street, London

  EHDR-UK - 24 Sep 2004

Another successful demonstration was conducted outside Downing Street in London on Friday 24 September 2004.  The demonstrators called for justice, the rule of law and for the protection of asylum seekers.  At the end of the peaceful demonstration a letter was handed to the representative of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  The letter highlighted the gross human rights violations in Eritrea and the absence of tolerance to any alternative views, the illegal detention of numerous people without due process and the increasing number of people fleeing the country. After commending the British government's role in engaging the Eritrean government solely and with its European partners, the letter asked Her Majesty's Government to take a lead by:

  • Not forcibly deporting any Eritreans back to Eritrea and by urging other governments, especially Libya, to stop forced deportation;

  • Increasing the pressure on the Eritrean government by means of targeted travel bans on the high ranking government and party officials

  • Calling for the immediate release of all political and religious prisoners;

  • Demanding the establishment of a genuine democratic government, which respects all the basic freedoms of worship, association and speech under the rule of law.

Inter-Parliamentary Union: Eritrea - Resolution adopted unanimously by the Governing Council

IPU - 23 April 2004

......Bearing in mind that the Constitution of Eritrea, in its Articles 15, 17 and 19, guarantees the right to liberty and to freedom from arbitrary arrest, the right for any detained person to be brought before a court of law within 48 hours of arrest and the right to freedom of expression, being rights also enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and in the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, to both which Eritrea is a party,

  1. Thanks the Ambassador of the State of Eritrea to the European Union, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain for the information and clarifications he provided;

  2. Takes note of the decision given in November 2003 in this case by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, ruling that the human rights of the former MPs concerned have been violated; deeply regrets that the authorities have so far not heeded the Commission's decision and continue to detain them in disregard of their obligations not only under the Constitution of Eritrea, but also under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the ICCPR;

  3. Affirms that the peace process under way can in no way justify such violation of human rights, which on the contrary can only harm that process;

  4. Urges therefore the authorities to heed the decision of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and to release the former MPs concerned without delay;

  5. Reiterates its decision to carry out an on-site mission to gather from the competent authorities and the persons concerned as much information as possible on this case, and stresses in this respect that it is a well-established doctrine that human rights matters are of international concern and that ensuring their respect is a duty incumbent upon the international community;

  6. Requests the Secretary General to contact the authorities again to seek their agreement to an on-site mission to be carried out as early as possible;

  7. Requests the Committee to continue examining this case and report to it at its next session, to be held on the occasion of the 111th Assembly (September-October 2004).

ERITREA: 'You have no right to ask' – Government resists scrutiny on human rights

AI - 19 May 2004

.......Amnesty International has been informed by recently-released prisoners and other sources that some detainees including some who were feared to have "disappeared" have been extrajudicially sentenced to prison terms. Secret committees of security, police and military officers reportedly received statements taken from prisoners after interrogation and assessments by their interrogators, and then made their judgments and delivered sentences. There was no hearing or opportunity for the detainee to present a defence or submit an appeal.

This practice of secret administrative sentencing can have no legitimacy whatsoever. It apparently started with the cases of the "Dergue detainees" – about 150 members of the former Ethiopian administration in Eritrea who were detained at independence in 1991. The government did not want to give them open trials, but instead they were given secret prison sentences of mostly 10-15 years, as in the cases of Isaac Tseggai, former Chief Administrator of Eritrea (reportedly now released), and Tesfaye Ma'asho, his deputy. They have been serving their sentences in official prisons where they were registered by the prison service as if they were court-sentenced prisoners......
