Representatives Mark Kirk, Mark Udall, Trent Franks and Jim Marshall are sponsoring a joint letter from members of the U.S. Congress to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, asking her to address serious concerns about human rights with authorities in Eritrea. Please ask your Representative in Congress to join in signing the letter. TAKE ACTION! Contact your Representative’s office today! Urge him or her to sign on to the letter sponsored by Congressmen Kirk, Udall, Franks and Marshall. Because the letter will only be open for signatures for a few weeks, please contact your Representative soon! If you’re not sure who your Congressional Representative is, you can find out on the AIUSA website at: http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/c.goJTI0OvElH/b.953517/k.7443/Your_Elected_Officials/siteapps/advocacy/search.aspx HERE’S WHAT TO DO: 1) Call your Representative by dialing the Congressional switchboard at: 202-224-3121. 2) Ask for a staff person responsible for human rights or international affairs. Get his/her name. 3) Tell him or her that you are a member of Amnesty International: a Nobel-prize-winning, grassroots human rights organization with over 300,000 members in the United States. 4) Inform them of the Dear Colleague letter sponsored by Congressmen Mark Kirk, Mark Udall, Trent Franks and Jim Marshall 5) Note that Eritrea has committed serious violations against a wide range of rights including the right to freedom of expression and freedom of religion. Many of Eritrea's leading journalists have been detained without charge for over five years, simply for having called for peaceful political change. One of them, prisoner of conscience Fessahaye Joshua Yohannes, co-editor of the weekly newspaper Setit, is reported to have died in detention in January. 6) Urge your Representative to sign his or her name to the letter. They can do so by contacting Jeff Phillips in Congressman Kirk's office at 225-4835 or Jennifer Barrett in Congressman Udall's office at 225-2161.
