Persecution of Evangelical Christians as Reported by:

U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom I   U.S. Department of State    I Christian Organizations  I    International Media

Testimonies:

I was arrested with 30 other believers during a 1999 Sunday evening church service.  Most of those attending were men, but a few members of the congregation were women.  Ten soldiers arrived and seized our bibles and musical instruments as evidence of  “crime.”  After 3 days in prison 10 of us were released and warned not to preach again (cf. Acts 4.18), while 20 others were jailed for 1 full year because they were conscripts in the army.  The charge was propagating religion among army members (even though there is no such law on the books).  During April, 2002, 3 churches were surrounded by soldiers during Sunday evening services.  The churches were emptied and the entire membership arrested and taken to a military camp for processing.  After 2 days the civilians were warned not to attend these churches again and released.  Christian members of the armed services were jailed and charged with propagating religion among army members.  This is not technically against the law, since there is no such law, but many remain imprisoned after 2 years.  Everybody under 40 years of age still has an obligation to serve in the military or in the reserves.
